BTOOOM! episode 04

Oh god, what a dreadful episode. Dreadfully good that is! The start was a bit bumpy, which made me think that the anime would only drag the manga down. But no, it’s starting to get a lot better. It might surpass the manga if it keeps going like this.

We get to know a psychotic little boy during this episode. This boy, Kousuke is his name, murdered women, only so that he could rape them afterwards. This landed him in police cells all the time, but they couldn’t do much against it because of his age. He’s fourteen. And his lawyer, whom also turned out to be a BTOOOM! candidate on that island, bailed him out during those times.

I hate characters like these, sorry. I don’t like the psychotic type. I don’t like the type of character that likes to kill, hurt or mutilate others. That is why I’ll be well pleased when someone, hopefully Ryouta, finally kills that little anti-Christ. Unleashing that little demon upon the public once more is irresponsible and dangerous.

Ryouta fought against Kousuke and won. I was happy. I cheered. I was angry and disappointed afterwards when he let him live. How the hell could he do that? He saw Kousuke as he murdered his own father. Sure, that man may have been the root of all evil, but that is no excuse. Seeing that would’ve been enough reason for anyone to kill that little brat.

I’ll just end this post by pointing out that Ryouta’s little secret is out now. He told that little brat his name, his in-game name. Kousuke knows now. It is only a matter of time before the rest finds out, after which they will probably come after Ryouta.

BTOOOM! episode 03

It was an interesting, yet rather dull episode this week. I learned a bit more about the situation on the island, so that was rather nice, but the action was rather disappointing. It was far from being exciting, that’s all.

The episode started where the first one stopped; with the awkward situation between Kimiko and Ryouta. Now, Ryouta didn’t really have much interest in her as a woman. He just ended up chasing her because she had food, which was kind of hard to find on that island, when suddenly he stumbled upon some old geezer that was trying to take a dump. That certainly did give a whole new spin on being caught with your pants down, huh?

I’ll just say it here and now; I do not like that geezer! He’s far too smart for his own good. He’s been scheming ever since he came in contact with Ryouta. I don’t like that. It’ll only be a matter of time before Ryouta gets double-crossed by that geezer.

I can see the advantages of being part of a team. You are far more vulnerable when you’re alone. You are open to surprise attacks. People will think twice about attacking a group of people. But still, I think that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Maybe that’s just me though…

I’ll just end this post by saying that I’m looking forward to next week’s episode. Not because I’m looking forward to seeing Himiko again, not because I want to see how Ryouta ditches the old man and certainly not because I’m interested in that evil little brat that we saw during the last few seconds of this week’s episode. I’m usually interested in that sort of thing, but not this time. There are only two logical ways in how this could end; either they will end up fighting or they end up running. I’ll go mad if he ends up joining that little party as well. That would be ridiculous.

BTOOOM! episode 02

Okay, I know my review on this wasn’t all that great, and I’m sure as hell not taking that back. But hey, the anime is interesting and amusing, so how can I leave it alone? There’s action, mild nudity and I like games, even if it’s at the cost of people’s lives, just like in BTOOOM! here.

Now, I was pretty interested in Himiko from the start. She’s a young, beautiful girl that likes to play videogames. That’s rare, believe me. I’d love to meet a beautiful gamer-chick. But anyway, I liked it when they showed us Himiko’s side of the story.

The strangest thing is; Himiko’s not a strong player at all. She was a newbie when she met Ryouta. Hell, he actually helped her get in-game experience points, which probably boosted her level. My question being; what is she doing on that island? Let’s face it guys, she’s not that strong. She is/was a total newbie. What’s the point of bringing in an inexperienced player?

Anyway, it was nice to get to know her more. She has a dark past, a very dark present and probably an even darker future if this continues. I mean, the poor girl almost got raped on her first day on that island. It’s a good thing that she reached for her bombs when she did, otherwise she would’ve been defiled by the fattest character in the show, just like her friends got defiled by those idol-wannabes.

I know it’s pretty obvious, but things are only going to get worse now that Ryouta, the guy that helped her out in the game (although she doesn’t know it’s him yet), accidently caught her in a rather vulnerable moment. Let’s see if Ryouta can control his urges next week…

I hate to say this, but this was quite a let-down. I have actually read a few chapters of the manga, several user reviews and even one or two news items. This particular piece was praised by many, only to turn out to be pretty disappointing. It’s not bad or anything like that, but it just didn’t live up to my expectations.

The artwork is very average. The characters, other than having those little gems in their hands, have absolutely no unique features, the sceneries seemed pretty plain and some of the character’s expressions were a bit off. Were they minor mistakes? Was it actually supposed to be like this? I don’t know, but it’s very disappointing.

The story is definitely the best thing about this anime. It’s unique, interesting and very dark. I’m sure that a lot of people will watch Btooom! Because of the great story. The author really got lucky with this one.

I recommend this anime to all sci-fi and action lovers. It’s a very dark story filled with action, so I think it’s safe to say that there won’t be many dull moments.

Plot Summary: The story centers around Ryūta Sakamoto, a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) young man and a top-ranked player in the online combat game Btoom! One day, he wakes up on a tropical island without remembering how he got there. He sees a figure in the distance and asks for help. However, the figure responds by throwing something at Ryūta — a “BIM” bomb. In that moment, Ryūta comes to realize two things: one, his own life is in danger, and two, he is now in the world of Btoom!
