The first television anime adaptation of the classic fairy tale series Ō-sama (His Royal Highness) will premiere on the satellite channel BS11 on April 6.

The stories follow a king who loves eating eggs and playing around, and despises studying. Despite his gluttonous, self-centered, boastful ways, he has endeared himself to generations of children.

Famed Japanese children’s book author Teruo Teramura and artist Shizuko Wakayama launched this fairy tale series in 1959 with Zō no Tamago no Tamagoyaki (Elephant Egg Omelet). Boku wa Ō-sama (I Am the Royal Highness), the book that lends the television anime its name, won the 15th Mainichi Shuppan Bunka-Sho award, while the A-I-U-E-Ō-sama (A-I-U-E-O Highness) book won the 3rd Ehon Nippon-Sho award. The series has about 50 books that have sold 5 million copies.

The Boku wa Ō-sama anime will run on Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m.
