Hajime no Ippo: Rising episode 02
Almost five years… I waited for almost five years for another Hajime no Ippo series to arrive. Anyone not interested in these series should be ashamed of themselves and be banned from watching anime altogether. Hajime no Ippo is pure magic.
The first episode was epic. We learned more about Ippo and his father, and how they struggled to survive without him. It was heart-warming and beautiful. I always thought that we knew far too little about his father. We’ve seen a picture of his old man before, which made me believe that his was a fight of sorts, too, because he was built like a brick chicken house. I had many theories. Maybe it was because he was in the army, maybe it was because he worked non-stop ever since he was little, or maybe he just liked to work out. Many, many theories about his father kept me busy, so to see the first half of episode one was wonderful.
Hell, not to mention the fact that we’re already watching Ippo fight off yet another opponent with his title on the line. It must be hard for Ippo to fight an opponent that’s actually smaller than he is. He’s always been the underdog that looked up to his opponents, always the challenger, so it’s kind of nice to see that those roles have been turned around on him.
I’m still not too sure if I like that seaman’s nonsense. That whole “dragging him to the depths of the ocean” thing doesn’t really do it for me. It’s nice to see that there’s someone out there that’s capable of taking Ippo’s punches and giving them straight back. I can’t wait to see how Ippo will improve his Dempsey roll now that it’s been defeated, although he still won the match.
