Another anime short… Great… The problem with Pupipo is that I have no idea what I’m supposed to be watching. Is it funny? Is it supposed to be scary? I have no idea. I suppose I don’t have to expect a great deal from an anime short.
The artwork is not the problem here. In fact, I think the artwork is pretty good compared to many other anime shorts out there. I also have no idea what they were trying to accomplish with those ghost-like characters. Were they supposed to be scary? I find the “human” characters far crappier than any of the supernatural characters.
The story… What story? Is there a story? Is it about the life of a little girl that can see supernatural stuff? Hate to break it to you, but that’s been done to death. I just feel like the story could use a touch-up.
Do I recommend this? Meh. I suppose that those select few that watch anime because of “cute” things will love this stuff. The “humans” may look creepy, but the rest of the characters could be described as “cute” I guess. Don’t be too reluctant to waste four minutes of your life… Just give it a shot.
Plot Summary: Himeji Wakaba is a 5th year elementary school student, and she has the ability to see things that others can’t. They are mostly frightening evil spirits, and they tend to do bad things to people who are close to her. As a result, Wakaba has no friends and rarely smiles. On a couple of occasions, she brings home stray animals, but her parents won’t let her keep them. However, they’re worried about their sad, creepy daughter, so one day they decide that whatever Wakaba brings home next, they’ll let her keep.
The next thing she brings home is a pink monster called “Pupipo”, but her parents stand by their decision and let her keep it. No one is quite sure what Pupipo is, but it protects Wakaba from the other things she sees. Pupipo also helps Wakaba make friends with an occult-obsessed transfer student and solve problems with bullying. Wakaba’s life is a much better place with her pet pink monster!
